Penn State Women's Tennis Team Captures Team GPA Award

June 5, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lion women's tennis team, under the guidance of head coach Dawna Denny, was honored with the Team Grade Point Average Award at this year's SAAB Annual Academic Achievement Awards Banquet.

The squad posted a 3.44 team GPA during the 2010-11 season, earning the top mark amongst all Penn State squads. Since the banquet takes place in April, prior to the end of the Spring Semester, the award honored the prior academic year's top finisher and was sponsored by the Varsity 'S' Club.

In addition to the team honor, five members of the 2011-12 Penn State women's tennis team were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team. Senior Kristen Roth (Ardmore, Pa.), juniors Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.), Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Ontario) and Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and sophomore Marie Bedard (Ile Bizard, Quebec) were all honored with the conference laurels.

Denny's team is coming off a 12-11 season, with each of the five Academic All-Big Ten players playing key roles in the team's success. Januskova was Penn State's No. 1 singles player all season long and ended the year with a 30-8 mark and was a first team All-Big Ten pick. Roth went 4-3 on the year, Henderson posted a 2-4 mark, Perrotta was 20-18 and Bedard went 15-19.
