Weber Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Aug. 20, 2012

PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Penn State freshman Mallory Weber (Novi, Mich.) has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Weber scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 upset victory at No. 7 Virginia on Friday. She netted two goals in the contest. The loss for the Cavaliers snapped their 21-game home-opening winning streak.

Weber was dangerous from the get-go and eventually scored two second half goals, including the game-winner at the 75-minute mark. Redshirt junior Tani Costa (Honolulu, Hawaii), who is coming off a torn ACL last year, scored Penn State's first goal of the 2012 season in the first half.

In the 75th minute with the game tied at one, the freshman capitalized on a breakaway goal, with the assist coming from senior Christine Nairn (Arnold, Md.) to give the Lions the lead right back. Nairn played a beautiful thru ball, which was ripped by Webber to the lower right corner from 18 yards out.

Weber was not done though, as she secured the victory with another breakaway on a ball from Erin Kehoe (Crystal Lake, Ill.) at the 87-minute mark. Weber is Penn State's first Freshman of the Week named by the Big Ten since Emily Hurd was last Oct. 17.
