Hayes Scores in USA's 1-1 Tie with China

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Penn State junior Maya Hayes (West Orange, N.J.) scored the only goal for Team USA as the Americans tied China 1-1 on Thursday morning at the U-20 World Cup. With the tie, the U.S. will now close out group play vs. Germany at 2:50 a.m. on Aug. 27. The game can be seen live on ESPNU and ESPN3.

Hayes was coming off a three-goal effort as the USA defeated Ghana on Monday morning. Hayes netted all three of her goals in the second half to propel the red, white and blue. With one goal today, Hayes now increases her international goal total to 16.

Penn State junior Taylor Schram (Canonsburg, Pa.) is also on the team with Hayes. Hayes and Schram are one of a total of 21 players that were selected to the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup team. Hayes and Schram are expected to return to the Penn State program no later than Sept. 16 as the Nittany Lions host Wisconsin.

Penn State hosts defending national champion and No. 1 Stanford this Friday, Aug. 24 for a 7:30 kick time, which will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
