Barry Advances to Third Day at Princeton Invitational

Princeton Invitational Day Two

PRINCETON, N.J. - Penn State men's tennis freshman Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) continued his strong performance at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational. Three other Nittany Lions competed in consolation rounds during Day Two. The tournament will conclude Sunday with several semifinals and finals matchups.

Barry improved to a 3-0 record in singles at the invitational. He advanced to the "Cordish" Draw final with a tough 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4 win against Princeton's Matt Spindler. Last season, Spindler competed in the two spot for the Tigers and was ranked in the 2012 ITA Preseason Doubles Poll. On the first day of the tournament, he defeated Buffalo's Ivan Vereschaga(6-4, 6-2) and Fairleigh Dickinson's Ibrahim Shams(6-3, 6-2). Barry will face Columbia's Ashok Narayana on Sunday at 9:00am.

After going 1-1 on the first day of the invitational, Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) fell in the "New Jersey Draw 2" consolation round to Princeton's Augie Bloom 6-4, 6-1. On the first day, the junior defeated Fairleigh Dickinson's Peter Svarka(6-2, 6-3).

Sophomore Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar) went 2-1 on Friday to advance to the "Pagoda" Draw consolation semifinal. However, Labna fell in the semifinal to Binghamton's Elliot Hureau 6-3, 6-1.

C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) lost a tough consolation battle to Princeton's Zack McCourt 6-3, 7-6(1). Griffin was competing in the "Tiger" Draw.
