PRINCETON, N.J. - Penn State men's tennis freshman Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) finished the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational with a 3-1 record. The four Nittany Lions attending the invitational tallied a total of six wins on the weekend. Penn State will head to Charlottesville, Va. next weekend, Sept. 21-23, for the Ranked plus One Tournament.
On Day Three, Barry lost a tough battle in the "Cordish" Draw final to Columbia's Ashok Narayana 7-5, 6-4. Despite the loss, it was an impressive debut for the freshman. Barry dropped only one set in his first three matches. On Friday, Barry defeated Buffalo's Ivan Vereschaga(6-4, 6-2) and Fairleigh Dickinson's Ibrahim Shams(6-3, 6-2). He then knocked off Princeton's Matt Spindler 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4 on Saturday.
Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar) finished the weekend with a 2-2 record in the "Pagoda" Draw. He reached the consolation semifinal with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson's Dom Devaux-Lowell(4-6, 6-1, 1-0(3)) and Penn's Jason Magnes(3-6, 6-2, 1-0(4)). He fell in the semifinal to Binghamton's Elliot Hureau(6-3, 6-1).
Junior Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) picked up a win over the weekend, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson's Peter Svarka, 6-2, 6-3. He was eliminated in the "New Jersey Draw 2" consolation round by Princeton's Augie Bloom, 6-4, 6-1.
C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) dropped a tough consolation match to Princeton's Zack McCourt(6-3, 7-6(1)) on Day Two. He dropped his first round match on Friday to Yale's Marc Powers(6-0, 6-3).
In doubles action, Barry and Griffin paired up in Doubles "A", but fell to Yale's Patrick Chase and John Huang(8-2). Labna and Young combined in Doubles "B", but were eliminated by Yale's Daniel Faierman and Matt Saiontz(8-3).
