Henderson Advances in First Round Play at Cissie Leary Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - Several Nittany Lions competed in their first matches of the fall today in the Cissie Leary Invitational. The Nittany Lions sent three players to Philadelphia. They were Sarah Henderson, Chelsea Utting and Jacqueline Zuhse.

Senior Sarah Henderson led the way for Penn State in the tournament. Henderson won both of her matches on the day. She started in the doubles competition, where she teamed with Courtney Amos of Yale, to defeat Delaware's duo of Milla and Halstrom. In her singles match she defeated Bowdoin's Emma Chow, 6-5, 6-2.

Chelsea Utting and Jacqueline Zuhse were downed by Malinchak and Michaels of Cornell in their first doubles match of the tournament 8-4. Both, Utting and Zuhse, were also ousted in the first round of singles competition. Utting lost to Columbia's Crystal Leung, 6-4, 6-0, while Zuhse was topped by Sarah Gealar of Maryland, 6-3, 6-2. Jacqueline was bested in her second singles match of the day, losing 6-2, 6-3.

Sarah Henderson will look to fight on in the singles and doubles tournaments while Chelsea and Jacqueline will look to consolations in tomorrow's second day. Action begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow, once again starting with two rounds of doubles followed by two rounds of singles play.
