CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished day two at the Ranked plus One Invitational at the University of Virginia. Sophomore Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) continued a strong run through the invitational, picking up two more wins on Saturday. Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) and both doubles teams also earned wins on day two. The tournament will finish on Sunday.
In the "Blue" Singles quarterfinal, Hanzlik won a tough battle against Ole Miss' William Kallberg 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Kallberg was ranked 56th in the 2012 ITA Preseason Singles Poll. In the semifinal, he defeated NC State's Sean Weber 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. He will face Virginia's Alex Domijan, the first seed in the draw, on Sunday at 10:30a.m. On Friday, he beat Memphis' David O'Hare 6-2, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals.
Freshman Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) fell to Radford's Nick Sayer 7-5, 6-2 in the "Blue" consolation quarterfinal. Sayer was ranked preseason 75th in the nation in singles. In the first round on Friday, Trkulja dropped a tough battle to George Washington's Alex Van Gils 7-5, 6-7, 6-1.
Welnetz lost to George Washington's Danil Zelenkov, 6-3, 6-4, in the "White" Singles consolation round. In the 13th place bracket, the senior bounced back with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Louisville's Michael Lippens. He will compete in the 13th place match against Radford's Joe Mills at 9:00a.m. on Sunday.
In the "Red" Doubles consolation third place game, Hanzlik and Welnetz shut out North Carolina's Andrew Gores and Stuart Depaolo 8-0.
Bader and Trkulja also won their consolation third place game in the "Silver" Doubles bracket, with an 8-4 victory over NC State's Thomas Weigel and Rafael Paez.
