UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior quarterback Matt McGloin (Scranton, Pa.) ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for one more as the Penn State football team downed intrastate rival Temple, 24-13, at Beaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions, who have not lost to the Owls since 1941, improved to 2-2 with their second straight win.
McGloin, who threw for a career-high 318 yards on 24-of-36 passing, recorded his third career 300-yard passing game to tie Daryll Clark for second most in program history. The signal caller's second-quarter touchdown run was also his first since 2010 against Michigan.
Sophomore wide receiver Allen Robinson (Southfield, Mich.) caught five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, while freshman tight end Kyle Carter (Bear, Del.) hauled in five passes for 70 yards. Tailback Zach Zwinak (Frederick, Md.) led the ground attack with 94 yards (18 carries), and Michael Zordich (Youngstown, Ohio) recorded a career-high 75 yards on 15 carries.
Senior linebacker Michael Mauti (Mandeville, La.), who forced a fumble, led the team with nine stops, while defensive tackle Jordan Hill (Steelton), linebacker Mike Hull (Canonsburg) and defensive tackle Kyle Baublitz (York) each recorded a sack. Penn State, which garnered 491 yards of total offense, limited the Owls to 237 total yards.
Robinson's 41-yard touchdown reception capped off a four-play, 46-yard drive as the Nittany Lions took a 7-0 lead with six seconds left in the opening quarter. The drive was set up by sophomore Jesse Della Valle's (Pittsburgh) 29-yard punt return to the Temple 46-yard line. Four plays later and facing fourth-and-five, McGloin pumped once and found Robinson down the middle of the field for his second touchdown reception of the season of at least 40 yards.
The Owls answered on the ensuing drive to make it a 7-3 game with 10:29 left in the second quarter. Quarterback Chris Coyer orchestrated an 11-play, 60-yard drive that culminated in Brandon McManus' 33-yard field goal.
Penn State took a 14-3 lead with 22 seconds remaining following McGloin's one-yard touchdown rush. After the Penn State defense forced a three-and-out, McGloin connected with tight end Kyle Carter (Bear, Del.) for receptions of 13 and 20 yards to set up the one-yard sneak.
The Nittany Lions added another touchdown with 4:57 left in the third quarter. After Zwinak's (Frederick, Md.) seven-yard rush, McGloin employed a two-yard sneak for his second rushing touchdown of the day. Zwinak rushed for 37 yards on the 11-play, 80-yard drive, while Alex Kenney (State College) made a 17-yard reception and Matt Lehman (Newport) hauled in a 22-yard pass.
With 1:37 left in the third quarter, McManus' 42-yard field goal cut the Penn State lead to 21-6. Coyer rushed for 28 yards, including a 20-yard carry, and threw for 12 more on the nine-play, 45-yard drive.
Penn State grabbed a 24-6 advantage with 2:33 remaining in the game. After the Nittany Lions drove down to the three-yard line, sophomore placekicker Sam Ficken (Valparaiso, Ind.) connected on a 21-yard field goal to end an 11-play, 68-yard drive.
Matt Brown caught a one-yard touchdown pass with 1:33 left as Temple cut the lead to 24-13. The four-play, 65-yard drive was highlighted by Montel Harris' 40-yard rush and Jalen Fitzpatrick's 24-yard reception before the score.
Penn State will return to action Saturday, Sept. 29 when it opens Big Ten play at Illinois. Opening kickoff is set at noon.
