NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Penn State women's golf team finished up an incredible three-day tournament at the Yale with a second place finish out of 16 teams. The Nittany Lions posted a final round score of 296, finishing the tournament with a combined score of 885.
Junior Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) improved her score each day, finishing the third round with a 72, finishing the tournament with a 219, three over par-72. She finished in a tie for sixth place continuing her consistent play. Sophomore Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) finished her final round with a 75, three over par-72 and ended up in a tie for ninth place. She finished two shots behind Vosters, carding a tournament total of 221. Penn State suffered a major loss when one of their best golfers, junior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) became sick during the third round and was not able to finish the match. This meant that every score had to be counted for Penn State, not allowing them to drop the highest score.
"I am very proud of this team for holding on to second place even after we were down a player [Ellen Ceresko]," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. "This team really stepped up with excellent scores across the board."
On the topic of the upcoming Nittany Lion Invitational along with the rest of the season coming up, Coach St. Pierre had to say, "I think the team has gained confidence in these first few tournaments. They seem to feed off of each other's success. We have a great field of 16 teams visiting for the Nittany Lion Invitational and it always helps having success up to this point."
Nova Southeastern University held on to win the Yale Intercollegiate by posting a final score of 859, winning by 26 strokes over the second place Nittany Lions. They finished the tournament with a combined score of 859, five over par-72. Daniela Ortiz of Nova Southeastern University won the individual part of the tournament, finishing with back-to-back rounds of 67. She finished the tournament with a 207, nine under par-72. Her teammate Abbey Gittings finished in second place, six strokes behind Ortiz.
The Nittany Lions are next scheduled to host the Nittany Lion Invitational, which is set for Sept. 28-30 at the Penn State Golf Course.
