UT Fall Invite Day One Doubles
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Junior Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) had a great performance on day one at the Tennessee Invitational. He earned two singles wins to advance to the White Singles Quarterfinal. He also combined with Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China) to pick up a doubles win. Both doubles teams advanced to their draw semifinal. The invitational will continue on Saturday with quarterfinal and semifinal action in singles and semifinals in doubles.
Chris Young got through two matches on Friday without dropping a set. In his first round match, Young defeated Western Michigan's Stephen Payne 6-2, 6-1. He faced Chattanooga's Jackson Tresnan in the second round and knocked him off with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. In the quarterfinal of the White Singles Draw, Young will face USC Upstate's Viktor Selander at 11:30 a.m.
Guanhua Chen picked up a win in the consolation round of the White Singles draw with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dayton's Colin Bernier. In the first round, Chen fell 6-0, 6-3 against Tennessee's John Collins. Chen will matchup against Wright State's Marc Sodini at 9:30 a.m. in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Senior C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) also won his Orange Singles Draw consolation round match, topping Eastern Kentucky's Joao Maio 6-0, 6-1. Griffin dropped a tough 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 result to Chattanooga's Roberto Vieira in the first round. In the consolation second round, he will face Wright State's Hayden Joblin at 9:30 a.m.
Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) fell in his Orange Singles Draw first round match to Tennessee's Jarryd Chaplin 6-3, 6-2. In the consolation round, he dropped a 6-2, 6-2 result to Xavier's Brandon MacDonald.
Chen and Young combined in the Orange Doubles Draw to knock off Xavier's MacDonald and Zachary Mueck 8-4. They advance to the semifinal, where they will face USC Upstate's Gonzalo Blanco and Yvon Haessig.
In the Smokey Doubles Draw, Barry and Griffin paired up in the quarterfinal to defeat Wright State's Michael Lyzwa and Lauri Makikalli 8-1. In the semifinal, they will matchup against Xavier's Patrick Bandy and Phil Diaz.
