MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Penn State diving team kicked off the first competition of the season, taking on West Virginia on Monday in Morgantown. Senior Alex Marchinski (Shillington, Pa.) led the Nittany Lions with a second place finish on the one-meter board, while freshman Emily Stotesbury (Greenwich, Conn.) participated in her first collegiate competition of her career.

On the men's side, Marchinski and sophomore T.J. Schenkel (Richboro, Pa.) had strong showings on the one-meter board against the Mountaineers, with the senior earning second place with a score of 284.78. Schenkel took fifth with a score of 250.73. The duo took third and fourth place on the three-meter board, with Marchinski recording a score of 287.25 and Schenkel finishing with 256.28 points. The Mountaineers' Christian Parker and Liam McLaughlin earned first place on the three- and one-meter boards, respectively.

Stotesbury and junior Megan Springsteen (Owego, N.Y.) took on the Mountaineers on the women's side, earning fourth and fifth place on the one-meter board, respectively. The rookie recorded a score of 219.15, while Springsteen finished with 203.03 points. The junior was only nine points away from topping her personal best score of 211.75, recorded at Maryland on Jan. 14. The pair again took fourth and fifth place on the three-meter board, with Stotesbury finishing with 203.33 points and Springsteen recording a score of 197.33. Lindsay Schmidt took home a first place finish on the one-meter board for the Mountaineers, while Haily Vande Poel claimed first on the three-meter board.

The Penn State swimming team will head to West Virginia on Friday, Oct. 19, to complete the annual season-opener with competition beginning at 5 p.m. in Morgantown. Both the swimming and diving squads will return home on Saturday, Nov. 10, to face Villanova at 11 a.m. at the McCoy Natatorium.
