Nittany Lions Find Success on First Day at ITA Regionals

Penn State women's tennis opened up with a fast start at the ITA Regionals in Blacksburg, Va. today. Competition started off with 2 qualifying rounds of singles and the first round of doubles.

Jacqueline Zuhse moved into the main draw of singles after winning both of her matches on the day. In the morning she defeated Mimi Hamling of George Washington, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

She advanced to play Erin Snook of Navy with the winner moving into the main draw beginning tomorrow. Zuhse dropped Snook in two sets, 7-5, 6-1 and will continue her play in the singles bracket tomorrow.

Sarah Henderson was the other Nittany Lion in singles action on the tournament's first day. She was matched up against Jordan Batey of Temple in the first round. Henderson fell short and was knocked out 6-1, 6-2. Batey won her second match and qualified for the main draw.

Henderson was back in action later in the day when she teamed with Carmen Sandor for the first round of doubles. The pair took on the sisters from the University of Pittsburgh. Amanda and Molly Wickman downed Henderson and Sandor, 8-6.

The singles main draw begins tomorrow with Zuhse joining Petra Januskova, Chelsea Utting, Carmen Sandor, Devan McCluskey and Katherine Whiteaway. The tournament's No. 1 seed, Januskova, faces Madeline Jaeger of Georgetown in her first match.

Sandor will square off against Kara Kucin of Marshall in her first singles match of the competition. Zuhse will look to stay unbeaten when she goes up against West Virginia's Ikttesh Chahal.

Utting will face Virginia Tech's Emily Lauten while Whiteaway battles Olga Tertaec of Virginia Commonwealth. Devan McCluskey will start her run in the singles tournament at 3:30 p.m. when she matches up against Diana Ivanova of Old Dominion.

Two pairs of Nittany Lions will start their Saturday with doubles matches. The tournament's No. 1 seeded pair of Januskova and Utting will start off against Temple's Alicia Doms and Jordan Batey at 8 a.m.

The other pair in doubles action for Penn State is the team of Katherine Whiteaway and Devan McCluskey who are coming off of their back draw championship at the Tribe Invitational. Their match is scheduled for 9 a.m.
