Coach Chambers Big Ten Media Day Roundup
CHICAGO, ILL.; Oct. 25, 2012 - Penn State senior guard Tim Frazier (Houston, Texas) has been named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team by a panel of conference media. The Big Ten Conference announced the preseason team and poll at Big Ten Basketball Media day in Chicago Thursday, which Frazier was attending with second-year Nittany Lion head coach Patrick Chambers and sophomore D.J. Newbill (Philadelphia, Pa.).
Frazier, who earned first-team All-Big Ten selection by the media last season, was joined on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team by Preseason Player of the Year Cody Zeller (Indiana), Trey Burke (Michigan), Aaron Craft (Ohio State) and Deshaun Thomas (Ohio State). Indiana, which was named the preseason No. 1 team in the nation by several publications, was picked as the favorite to win the Big Ten by the media. Michigan and Ohio State, two of the three teams that shared the 2011-12 Big Ten title, were selected to finish second and third, respectively.
Frazier, the only returning first-team All-Big Ten selection from last season, is the conferences top returner in scoring and assists after leading the Big Ten with 6.2 assists and finishing second with 18.8 points per game last year. Frazier was also named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team last year and finished second in the conference with 2.4 steals per game. Frazier was the only player in NCAA Division I to average at least 17 points and six assists last season and led the nation accounting for 58.4 percent of his team's offense. He set a Penn State season record with 198 assists and ranked 14th in the nation in assists. Despite being the focus of opposing defenses, Frazier exceeded his scoring average 13 times in Big Ten play, raised his scoring average to 19.6 ppg in Big Ten games and averaged 21.0 ppg in Big Ten road games.
The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree enters his senior campaign needing just 30 points to become the Nittany Lions' 30th 1,000-point scorer and 157 assists shy of eclipsing the Penn State career assist record of 600 set by Freddie Barnes in 1992. Frazier is on pace to end his career among Penn State's top five career leaders in scoring, assists and steals and as just the second Lion ever to post 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.
Penn State will take the floor on Saturday, Nov. 3 for an exhibition contest vs. Philadelphia University (4:00 p.m.) before officially opening the 2012-13 campaign on Friday, Nov. 9 with a 7:00 p.m. tip vs. Saint Francis in the Bryce Jordan Center.
