Nittany Lion Fencers Find Success at Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Members of the Penn State Men's fencing team competed today at the Temple Open in Philadelphia, which served as their first collegiate competition of the 2012-2013 season. The men followed the women's team, who competed at the Open on Saturday.

There was a total of nine Nittany Lion fencers who placed within the top 10 of their respective events.

The fencers who represented the men's epee team had very strong performances. Sophomore Yasser Mahmoud finished tied for third place, and junior Mitchell Culler placed fifth. Sophomores Daniel Ashkeboussi, Max Kleeman, and Jeffrey Miller all had impressive performances and ranked eighth, ninth, and fifteenth, respectively.

Sophomore Sean Moran competed very well, and placed second in men's saber. Sophomores Michael Brand and Gaspar Lesznik placed eighth and fourteenth in saber, respectively.

Women's team captain Jessica Russo led the women's saber team with her 2nd place finish in Saturday's competition. Sophomore Elizabeth Rapp also had an impressive performance, and placed 8th in the event. Senior Ana Coutinho took home 10th place in women's foil.

Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov's team will compete at home this upcoming weekend, Nov. 3-4, as they host the 41st annual Penn State Garret Open.
