UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State senior linebacker Michael Mauti (Mandeville, La.) was chosen as the Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 "Ironman of the Game" for his week five performance against the Fighting Illini. Mauti received the most fan votes of the four nominees this week to win these honors for the second time this season.
Mauti turned in an unbelievable performance for the Nittany Lions defense this past Saturday in Illinois. Michael made Penn State history on Saturday with a 99-yard interception return against Illinois, breaking Penn State's previous longest interception return of 98 yards in 1958. Not only was he a stand out player with that play, but Mauti also managed to grab two other interceptions throughout the game. He also made six tackles and tallied 0.5 sacks in the 35-7 win over the Illini.
This year's "Ironman of the Game" winners have included Michael Mauti himself previously for the Virginia Game, Allen Robinson (Southfield, Mich.) for the Ohio game, Michael Zordich (Youngstown, Ohio) for the Navy game and Matt McGloin (Scranton, Pa.) for the Temple game.
Nittany Lion fans can vote online each week throughout the football season for the Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 "Ironman of the Game". Fans can visit GoPSUsports.com/ironman from noon each Monday to noon on Tuesday to cast their vote for the week's top performer on the field.
