CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Penn State men's tennis team picked up two more singles wins and two doubles win at the UVa Fall Classic on Saturday. The Nittany Lions have a combined six singles and three doubles through day two of the tournament. Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) and Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar) both won consolation round matches. The classic will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 7.
The freshman, Barry, won his second match of the tournament. In a Fifth Place bracket matchup, he defeated Coastal Carolina's Hunter Whalen 6-2, 6-1. On the first day of the tournament, Barry earned a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel. On Sunday, Barry will compete for Fifth Place in the "Black" Singles draw against George Washington's Viktor Svensson.
Competing in the "White" Singles 13th place bracket, Labna defeated Norfolk State's Sam Lemberger 6-3, 6-2. Labna will face College of Charleston's Charlie Ghriskey in the 13th Place match on Sunday.
In the "Blue" Singles Fifth Place bracket, Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China) fell 6-2, 6-4 to Morgan State's Duk Young Park. On the first day of the classic, Chen picked up his first win of the fall with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Norfolk State's Kent Austin. On Sunday, Chen will compete for Seventh Place against Coastal Carolina's John Karle.
Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) also competed in a Fifth Place bracket match in a "Gold" Singles battle with College of Charleston's Alon Faiman 6-3, 6-4. Young earned a 6-4, 6-0 win against Norfolk State's Dima Zymantovich on Friday. In a Seventh Place matchup on Sunday, Young will face Liberty's Shea Thomas in a rematch from the quarterfinals, when Thomas won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
After picking up a consolation bracket victory on Friday, C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) dropped a tough 7-6(6), 6-2 battle against James Madison's Rob Stirling. Griffin was on the other end of a tough match on Friday, with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory over College of Charleston's Josh Record. In a "Red" Singles Consolation Third Place match on Sunday, Griffin will compete against College of Charleston's Billy Kenny.
Chen and Young fell to College of Charleston's Brice Allanic and Sebastian Lopez 8-4 in an "Orange" Doubles semifinal on Saturday. They responded by earning Third Place with an 8-2 win over Coastal Carolina's Hunter Whalen and Sam Barr. They picked up a tough 9-7 win on Friday over Norfolk State's Peter Pello and Igor Braga.
Barry and Griffin dropped an 8-5 result against VCU's Dylan McClosky and Francis Pare in a "Red" Doubles consolation match. They claimed third place in the consolation bracket after Virginia's Uriguen and Alex Scheinman retired due to illness.
