CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Day Three at the UVa Fall Classic concluded with four members of the Penn State men's tennis team picking up singles wins in their consolation match. The Nittany Lions won a total of ten singles matches and two doubles matches during the weekend-long tournament. Next weekend, Penn State will send members of the team to the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
Freshman Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) earned Fifth Place in the "Black" Singles draw with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over George Washington's Viktor Svensson. It was Barry's third win of the weekend, with the other two coming against Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel(5-7, 6-4, 6-0) and Coastal Carolina's Hunter Whalen(6-1, 6-2). Through his first two college tournaments, Barry has a record of 6-2, including a run to the draw final at the Princeton Invitational.
Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar) finished the weekend with two wins and 13th Place in the "White" Singles draw. On Sunday, Labna defeated College of Charleston's Charlie Ghriskey 6-4, 6-1 to claim 13th Place. His other win came on Saturday in a consolation match against Norfolk State's Sam Lemberger 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) claimed a Seventh Place victory against Morgan State's Duwane Thomas 6-0, 6-0 on Sunday. Young also won two matches over the weekend. On Friday, Young defeated Norfolk State's Dima Zymantovich 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the "Gold" Singles Draw.
C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) defeated College of Charleston's Billy Kenny 6-4, 6-2 to earn Third Place in the "Red" Singles draw consolation bracket. His other win in the tournament came against College of Charleston's Josh Record 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Senior Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China) was scheduled to matchup against Coastal Carolina's John Karle in the "Blue" Singles Seventh Place match. However, that match was not played. Chen earned his first win of the fall on Friday in his first round victory over Norfolk State's Kent Austin 6-0, 6-1.
Chen and Young also picked up two doubles wins on the weekend. They earned a tough 9-7 win over Norfolk State's Peter Pello and Igor Braga on Friday. They claimed Third Place in "Orange" Doubles on Saturday with an 8-2 win against Coastal Carolina's Hunter Whalen and Sam Barr.
Barry and Griffin claimed Third Place in the "Red" Doubles consolation bracket.
