Women's Tennis Concludes First Day of Play at WMU Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - WMU Super Challenge Draws & National Indoor Consolation Draw

The Nittany Lions, led by Sarah Henderson, Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway, finished their first day of play at the WMU Super Challenge with five wins.

Henderson and Carmen Sandor got the ball rolling with their doubles victory over DePaul's duo of Rebeca Mitrea and Jarret Fisher winning, 9-7. It was the duo's second time playing together this fall and their first victory. It also gave Henderson her fourth doubles win of the fall season, which is a career high for her in the fall.

In their following doubles match, Henderson and Sandor were knocked out by Quinn Gleason and Katherine White of Notre Dame, 9-7, and will play Simona Cacciuttolo and Ksenia Pronina of Iowa State in the third place match tomorrow.

Henderson was also victorious in her singles draw defeating Western Michigan's Maggie Remynse 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(10). She moves on to face Carolyn Chupa of Indiana in the next round.

Zuhse and Whiteaway were also victorious in their matches today. They teamed up to defeat Notre Dame's Molly O'Koniewski and JoHanna Manningham, 8-2. It was their first time teaming together.

Zuhse defeated her singles opponent Stefanie Villajuan of Louisville 6-4, 6-3 while Whiteaway defeated Mandy Brown of Louisville 7-6(7), 7-6(5). Zuhse faces Shannon Murdy of Indiana tomorrow and Whiteaway will square up against Jarret Fisher in the next round.

In other doubles action Chelsea Utting and Devan McCluskey were bested by Louisville's team of Julia Fellerhoff and Manuela Velasquez, 8-0. Freshman Lisa Petruzillo and Emily Rivers were topped by Jithmie Jayawickrema and Gabrielle Rubenstein of Indiana 8-0. In their next match Petruzillo and Rivers were bested by Iowa State's Ellie Nixon and Claudia Ortiz 8-2 and will play in the back draw third place match tomorrow.

Utting was topped by Fellerhoff in her rematch 6-3, 6-2 and will face Cacciuttolo of Iowa State tomorrow in the back draw. McCluskey lost to DePaul's Jasmin Kling, 6-3, 6-1. She will look to put the loss behind her when she goes up against Indiana's Alecia Kauss tomorrow.

Sandor was topped in her first round singles match by Manuela Velasquez 6-7(4), 6-4, 1-0(5). Sandor will face Emily Reuland of Bowling Green in the consolation draw tomorrow.

Petruzillo took on Aleeza Kanner of Marquette but was topped 8-0. She is set to face Katie Grubb of Bowling Green tomorrow in the back draw. Rivers matched up against Marquette's Ali Dawson in her first singles match and was bested 6-1, 6-1. She will face Drew Fillis of Bowling Green in the back draw tomorrow.

In New York, Petra Januskova moved on in the consolation draw at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships after a walkover win against Natalie Beazant of Rice. She will face Alexa Guarachi of Alabama at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the quarterfinals of the back draw.

Play will continue in the WMU Super Challenge tomorrow morning with both doubles and singles action at the West Hills Athletic Club.
