UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.: November 11, 2012 - Senior Sam Masters (Columbia, Mo.) will join the Nittany Lion women's squad at the NCAA Cross Country Championships next weekend, via an "at-large" qualifying bid, announced by the NCAA on Saturday afternoon. Masters received one of 29 individual spots at NCAAs, which are based on performance at the NCAA Regional Championships. The NCAA Championships are slated for Saturday, November 17, at the University of Louisville.
Masters helped the Nittany Lions to a fifth-place finish in the team standings, thanks to a 12th-place effort, individually. Finishing the 10,000-meter course in 30:48, Masters also claimed All-Region status, following his Top 25 finish. Teammate Tyler Jones (Chalfont, Pa.) also garnered All-Region honors, finishing in 25th overall.
The senior already has a solid performance on the Louisville course under his belt this season, having finished 17th overall in a stellar field at the Greater Louisville Classic in September.
Masters will make the trip to Louisville, along with a high-powered Nittany Lion women's team, who took top honors at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, edging defending NCAA Champion Georgetown, 61-63, last Friday at the Blue-White Golf Course.
Race times in Louisville are scheduled for 12:00 p.m., and 1:15 p.m., Saturday.
