KALAMAZOO, Mich. - WMU Super Challenge Draws & National Indoor Consolation Draw
Chelsea Utting and Devan McCluskey brought home the back draw doubles crown during the second day of play at the WMU Super Challenge after winning both of their matches on the day.
In their first match the duo defeated Jill Pastunink and Kathleen Hawkins of Western Michigan 8-6 and were set to face Erin Gebes and Ana Pimienta of Marquette in the consolation championship. In the final Utting and McCluskey capped off their tournament with a 8-5 win.
Sarah Henderson also had a good day on the court. Along with Carmen Sandor she defeated Iowa State's duo of Simona Cacciuttolo and Ksenia Pronina to win their draw's third-place match. After the doubles match she was set to face Carolyn Chupa of Indiana in the singles semifinal but Chupa was not able to compete. Henderson moves into the final tomorrow where she will take on Mary Hill of Bowling Green.
Henderson was able to get in an extra match since she didn't get to play in her scheduled draw. She took on Marquette's Pimienta but was topped 6-3, 6-3. Sandor faced Emily Reuland of Bowling Green but was unable to finish the match and retired during the first set.
McCluskey won her singles match against Indiana's Alecia Kauss 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(6) and moves into the consolation final where she will square up against Aina Hernandez Soler of Marquette.
Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway lost both of their doubles matches on the day. In their first match they were topped by Shannon Murdy and Kauss of Indiana 8-3. They lost another tough match to Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner of Marquette losing 9-7.
The Freshman duo of Lisa Petruzillo and Emily Rivers also couldn't quite pull out a victory in their match today. They were topped by Katie Brozovich and Mary Hill of Bowling Green 8-1. Petruzillo played Katie Grubb of Bowling Green in her singles match but was bested 6-0, 6-0. She faced Ellie Nixon in an added match but after losing a nail-biter in the first set couldn't come from behind and was bounced 7-5, 6-0.
Rivers was also defeated in her singles match losing to Drew Fillis of Bowling Green 6-1, 6-0. Tomorrow Petruzillo will face Darby Mountford of Notre Dame in her draw's third-place consolation match. Rivers is set to play Louisville's Valentina Schneider in the third-place consolation match of her draw.
Utting, Zuhse and Whiteaway were all unable to come away with victories in their singles matches. Utting was edged by Cacciuttolo after winning the first set, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(5). She will face Erin Gebes tomorrow in the third-place consolation match. Zuhse played a tough match but couldn't come out on top losing 7-6(11), 6-2, against Murdy. Tomorrow she'll play Rocio Diaz of Marquette in the third-place match of her draw. Whiteaway battled DePaul's Jarret Fisher but came away empty-handed losing 6-3, 6-2. She is set to play Notre Dame's Molly O'Koniewski tomorrow in her draw's third-place match.
Final day of play at the WMU Super Challenge will begin tomorrow morning with the rest of the singles matches. At the National Indoor Championships in New York, Petra Januskova was topped by the nation's No. 36 ranked player, Alexa Guarachi of Alabama, losing 6-1, 6-0.
