UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - McIntosh and Vollrath Claim Titles at ESU Open Five Nittany Lions place at open competition UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 18, 2012 - Fifteen members of the Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team took part in the East Stroudsburg Open, which concluded late last evening. Red-shirting sophomore Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calf.) and junior James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) each claimed titles at the event in which most Lions wrestled unattached.
McIntosh was unstoppable, going 4-0 with three majors and a technical fall to win the 197 pound crown. Vollrath was equally impressive, going 4-0 with a pin and a major to win the championship at 157. True freshman Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.) took second at 133, going 4-1 with two majors. Red-shirt freshman James Frascella (Carmel, Ind.) had an outstanding tournament, going 4-1 with a tech fall to place second at 174. Also placing for Penn State were the Beitz brothers. Sophomore Seth Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) went 5-2 with a major to take fourth at 149 while true freshman Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) was 7-2 with two majors at 141 to take fifth.
A number of Lions had fine tournaments as well. Red-shirt freshman Michael Waters (Advance, N.C.) went 3-2 at 141; junior Andrew Church (Erie, Pa.) was 4-2 with a pin and a major at 174; sophomore Kyle Moran (Oxford, Pa.) went 2-2 with a major at 141; freshman David Batkowski (Montoursville, Pa.) went 2-2 with a major and a pin at 141; sophomore Cameron Kelly (Pittsford, N.Y.) picked up a major at 133; red-shirt freshman Rex Lutz (Easton, Pa.) picked up a win at 165; freshman David Owens (Derry, N.H.) grabbed a victory at 149; red-shirt freshman Scott Syrek (Chester Springs, Pa.) picked up a win at 197 and Caleb Livingston (Drexel Hill, Pa.) competed at 165.
The Nittany Lions will take part in the 2012 Nittany Lion Open on Sunday, Dec. 2, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Rec Hall (The NLO is NOT part of Penn State's season ticket package, tickets are sold at the door the day of the event). Penn State's next home dual is set for Sunday, Dec. 9, when the Indiana Hoosiers come to town for a 2 p.m. meeting. Penn State's full season of home duals is sold out but limited Standing Room Only tickets are available for select dual meets.
