SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Freshman forward David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) scored his team-leading seventh goal and classmate Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) made 42 saves to set a career high for the second straight game, but the Penn State men's hockey team fell to No. 8 Union, 4-1, at Messa Rink Sunday evening. The Nittany Lions fell to 6-5-0 with the loss, while the Dutchmen improved to 8-2-1.
Union's Daniel Ciampini, who also added an assist, opened the scoring at 7:21 of the first period before Glen tied the game less than a minute into the second stanza. Freshman forward Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) and sophomore forward Max Gardiner (Deephaven, Minn.) collected assists on Glen's equalizing goal.
In the third period, Union's Shayne Gostisbehere notched a power-play marker to give Union a 2-1 lead. Later in the frame, Mark Bennett scored and Daniel Carr added an empty-net tally as the Dutchmen grabbed a 4-1 advantage.
Union outshot the Nittany Lions by 46-38 margin and ended 1-for-4 on the power play. Penn State, which dropped back-to-back contests for the first time this season, finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Union netminder Troy Grosenick made 37 saves.
Union took a 1-0 lead with 12:39 left in the first period. Kyle Bodie sent a pass to Greg Coburn at the right point, where he sent a shot through traffic that was stopped by Skoff. After the save, the puck rolled over and behind the goaltender before Ciampini poked the rebound into the net.
Glen tied the game 50 seconds into the second period. From behind the cage, Gardiner sent the puck to the right corner where Glen slid it across the ice to the right half wall. Brooks chased the puck down and took a shot from the circle that Grosenick stopped, but Glen was positioned right on the doorstep to knock it past the netminder.
With 16:37 left in the third, Gostisbehere broke the 1-1 tie with a power-play goal. Wayne Simpson sent a pass to Gostisbehere at the point, where he one-timed a shot past Skoff. Ciampini also collected on assist on the play.
Bennett added his first tally of the season at 8:08 of the frame. Cole Ikkala sent a pass to Ryan Forgaard near the blue line, where he sent a shot that Bennett deflected high over Skoff.
With 1:12 left in the game, Carr added an empty-net marker to account for the 4-1 final.
The Nittany Lions will return home for a pair of exhibition matchups against Arizona State's club team Nov. 30-Dec 1. Opening faceoff is set at 7:30 p.m. for both games.
