Women's Fencing finishes on top in epee and saber at Garret Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State fencers finished on top in both epee and saber n the first day of action of the 41st annual Garret Open. The tournament was held in Penn State's White Building and will continue tomorrow with the men's competition.

Senior Margherita Guzzi Vincenti cruised to a 15-9 victory over Notre Dame's Nicole Ameli to claim the epee title. Freshman Jessica O'Neill-Lublinsky placed fourth in epee after fighting through a hand injury in her semi final round.

Junior Nicole Glon fought hard through her semifinal and final rounds to win a well earned first place finish in women's saber. Glon trailed Princeton's Gracie Stone 12-14 late in the final match, but stormed back to take first. Sophomore Elizabeth Rapp took home seventh place, and team captain Jessica Russo finished fourteenth.

Penn State women's foil didn't fair as well as the other events, but freshman Clarisse Luminet took home fifth place. Sophomore Kane Gladnick placed thirteenth, and freshman Christine Fanning placed nineteenth.

Garret Open competition will resume tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. in the White Building with the men's competition.
