UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State senior midfielders Christine Nairn (Arnold, Md.) and Maddy Evans (Glenside, Pa.) have been selected in the National Women's Soccer League draft, announced on Friday. Nairn was selected by Seattle Rein FC with the seventh overall pick, while Evans went to the Boston Breakers with the 29th overall pick.
The National Women's Soccer League is a new eight-team league that will begin play in the spring of 2013. U.S. Soccer has played a major role in organizing and running the league to ensure a business model with a focus on sustainability. U.S. Soccer subsidized the salaries of U.S. Women's National Team players along with the Canadian Soccer Association. Fans can follow the NWSL on Twitter at @NWSL.
Nairn earned her first ever Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and first team NSCAA All-American honor, was a finalist for this year's M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. Nairn finished her career second on the all-time assists list in program history and doubled her career goal total this season. The senior scored the emotional golden goal against Florida State in the national semifinals.
Evans served as Penn State's team captain this past season and played a pivotal role in leading the Nittany Lions to the College Cup Final. The senior finishes her stellar Nittany Lion career with 11 goals, nine assists and 31 points. She currently serves as the President of Student Athlete Advisory Board at Penn State and was an All-Big Ten Second Team selection this past season.
