UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's gymnastics team will open the 2013 home slate in a quad meet with Minnesota, Towson and Kent State on Saturday in Rec Hall at 7 p.m. Fans in attendance will receive a free schedule magnet while supplies last. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for youth and students are free.
Fans that are unable to attend the match can follow it live via a link on GoPSUsports.com. In additionally, the meet will be available to watch on GoPSUsports.com All-Access. Fans attending the meet will have an opportunity to purchase the "Paint it Pink" t-shirts on the west end concourse. The Breast Cancer Awareness meet is slated for Feb. 2 vs. Ohio State.
"We're so excited to be home after two long weekends on the road," said head coach Jeff Thompson. "We have had a great week of practice and are excited to see how we measure up with three other great teams. We are also excited for our fans to experience our new meet set-up. It's what we will use when we host the Big Ten and NCAA Regional championships next year."
Last weekend, Penn State earned its highest team score through two meets this season in a 194.150-191.700 victory over the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames. Freshman Samantha Musto (Mays Landing, N.J.) was the all-around champion with a score of 39.025, earning her Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second-straight time. Senior Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted the second-best all-around score, earning a mark of 38.600 despite a fall on the floor. Junior Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) competed in the all-around for the first time in her Nittany Lion career, putting up a score of 38.425. Sophomore Lexi Carroll (Olney, Md.) rounded out the Nittany Lion all-arounders with a 37.950. Musto's 39.025 beat her mark from last week.
Minnesota will be Penn State's first Big Ten draw of the 2013 season. The Golden Gophers are on the road for the first time in 2013. Last season, Penn State defeated the Gophers in a dual meet, 195.475-195.150. The Gophers currently stand at No. 11 in this week's GymInfo Top 25 Rankings after opening the season with a 195.550-193.500 victory at home against then-No. 17 Washington.
Towson opened its season with a 192.025 team score and win over William and Mary. The Nittany Lions are looking to improve to 7-5 vs. the Tigers, last facing off with them in 1993. Meanwhile, Kent State last competed at Iowa State where they were defeated by the slim margin of 193.625-193.575. Penn State is 18-0 all-time against the Golden Flashes.
Penn State returns to Happy Valley next Saturday as it hosts Iowa, Rutgers and Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. inside Rec Hall.
