Training Trip Closes with Relay Duals vs. North Carolina

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 3, 2013 -- The Nittany Lions closed out their training trip in Naples, Fla. on Thursday (Jan. 3) with a friendly competition again North Carolina in a modified meet that included a handful of non-traditional relay events, while the divers competed on the first day of the Tennessee Collegiate Diving Invitational.

The Nittany Lions swam six relay events versus the Tar Heels, winning a pair of events, to close out their training in the Sunshine State. You won't see many of the events that the two teams swam in the NCAA Championships and the times were a tad bit slower due to the training regimen that takes place during the middle of the college swimming season, but the one event that will be on the championship schedule was the 200 medley relay.

The team of Mackenzie Powers (Sycamore, Ill.), Merritt Krawczyk (Kingwood, Texas), Carolyn Fittin (Sea Grit, N.J.) and Paige Whitmire (Lederach, Pa.) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:45.90. The other winning relay team for Penn State came in the 3x100 breaststroke when Krawczyk, Hailey Sinatrr>o (West Hartford, Conn.) and Grace Ninesling (Spring, Texas) claimed the race in 3:17.33.

On the boards, Megan Springsteen (Owego, N.Y.) and Emily Stotesbery (Greenwich, Conn.) both competed in the three-meter competition at the Tennessee Collegiate Diving Invitational. Springsteen compiled a score of 192.95 in the competition,. Stotesbery finished close behind with a final score of 192.45 in the prelims.

The Tennessee Collegiate Diving Invitational continues on Fri., Jan. 4 at 11:30 a.m. when the women take to the one-meter board, while the complete squad will compete in net at a tri-meet at Arkansas with Missouri State on Sat., Jan. 12 at 11:00 a.m.
