Sanders Named CAA Rookie of the Week

Feb. 11, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. - Boasting the best performance by a newcomer in the Colonial Athletic Association, freshman TJ Sanders (Orillia, Ont.) was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday evening. Sanders tallied a five-point day in an 11-6 win at Michigan.

Sanders scored the first two goals of the Penn State (1-0) season at Michigan, going on to score four times and add an assist. The five-point performance was one of the best by a Penn State freshman in his debut performance and was best among all Nittany Lions on Saturday.

Sanders had eight shots in the game, meaning his four goals produced a .500 shooting percentage. Through the first 40 minutes of the game, Sanders matched the entire Wolverine output of three goals.

The Canadian also added two ground balls to his ledger and was one of two Nittany Lions (Shane Sturgis; Downingtown, Pa.) to score four goals. The last Nittany Lion to be named CAA Rookie of the Week was Pat Manley (Arnold, Md.) on Feb. 20, 2012 for his two-point showing against Michigan.

Penn State travels to Jacksonville, Fla. to face the No. 9 Denver Pioneers in the Moe's Southwest Grill Classic on Sunday, Feb. 17. The game will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Network at 1 p.m.
