UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Penn State senior guard Alex Bentley (Indianapolis, Ind.) has been named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Nebraska's Jordan Hooper, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Bentley becomes the third different Lady Lion to win Big Ten Player of the Week this year, joining senior Nikki Greene (Diboll, Texas) and two-time Big Ten Player of the Week Maggie Lucas (Narberth, Pa.). Additionally, Bentley earns Big Ten Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Bentley had a stellar week for the Lady Lions, averaging 22.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in a pair of wins over Indiana and Michigan State. Sunday's win over the Spartans clinched Penn State's 25th 20-win season in program history and the third-straight 20-win season for the No. 8/9 Lady Lions (20-3, 10-1).
In last Thursday's 76-54 victory at Indiana, Bentley connected on a pair of three-pointers en route to 20 points to go along with four rebounds, three steals and an assist in her final appearance in her home state. The Indianapolis native then turned around with a 9-for-16 performance from the field in a 71-56 win over Michigan State on Sunday in the Bryce Jordan Center. The senior scored 24 points with four thefts, three assists and a rebound against the Spartans. With the four steals, Bentley became fourth player in school history and 15th player in Big Ten history to accumulate 300 steals. Additionally, she is just the fourth player in Big Ten history to amass 1,500 points, 500 assists and 300 steals.
