UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA), in its 41st year as the leading men's volleyball conference in the east, announced its second-ever Hall of Fame Class. Former Nittany Lion Ivan Contreras was selected as one of three honorees.
Joining Contreras are former Princeton head coach Glen Nelson and former George Mason head coach Wayne Stalick. The trio will be recognized at the EIVA Championship match on April 27 at the site of the top seed in the tournament.
Contreras helped the Penn State men's volleyball team to its first national title in 1994. A four-time All-American, he was the first non-California player ever to be named the AVCA National Player of the Year, an honor he earned in 1997. That same year, Contreras was selected the inaugural EIVA Player of the Year and was a four-time First Team All-EIVA pick. Contreras owns the Penn State career record for kills with 2,089, and is also in the top 10 in several other statistical categories. He also excelled off the court as a three-time GTE Academic All-American. Following his collegiate career, Contreras played professionally in Puerto Rico, Turkey, Belgium and Switzerland.
