UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's lacrosse freshman TJ Sanders (Orillia, Ont.) was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday. Sanders has been named CAA Rookie of the Week in two of the four award cycles this season.
Sanders put on an offensive display against Ohio State on Saturday, scoring five times to lead all goal scorers in a 10-9 overtime defeat to the Buckeyes. Sanders scored once in the first period before tallying four of Penn State's six goals in the second stanza. The five goals were a career high, topping his four-goal effort against Michigan in his first collegiate game on Feb. 9.
Sanders leads the Nittany Lions with 13 goals, while holding top points honor with Jack Forster (Jenkintown, Pa.). The attacking duo has combined for 30 points (15 points apiece) as the Nittany Lions have scored 11 goals per game in 2013. Last season, the Nittany Lions averaged 8.73 goals per game.
In four awards cycles, Penn State has had an honoree in three of them as Shane Sturgis (Downingtown, Pa.) gathered a Player of the Week accolade on Feb. 18.
The Nittany Lions return to action on Saturday against Lehigh at 5 p.m. in Chester's PPL Park. The game is the nightcap of the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic presented by Inside Lacrosse.
