UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshman attack TJ Sanders (Orillia, Ont.) was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player and Rookie of the Week for his performance against Towson on Saturday. Sanders scored five goals to lead the Nittany Lions into sole possession of first place.
Sanders upped his conference-leading goal tally to 33 with five against the Tigers. Sanders tallied three goals in the first half against Towson before scoring once each in the third and fourth.
The Ontario native has seven hat tricks this season along with six games of four goals or more and three games with five goals scored. Nationally, Sanders ranks tied for eighth in goals per game (2.75) and leads the nation's freshmen in goals.
The weekly rookie award is the fifth for Sanders, while he shares the player of the week honor with Ben McIntosh of Drexel. The player of the week laurel is the first of his young career.
Penn State (9-3, 4-0 CAA) won its seventh straight game, while snapping Towson's four-game win streak. The Nittany Lions can clinch a share of its first CAA title with a win at Delaware on Saturday at 7 p.m.
