UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Three members of the Penn State women's lacrosse team earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America honors as sophomores Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) and Maggie McCormick earned second-team recognition and senior Katie Guy (Whitby, Ont.) was named to the third team, the organization announced Wednesday morning. All three Nittany Lions were honored with All-America laurels for the first time in their careers.
Penn State boasted three IWLCA All-Americans for the second straight year and third time since 2005. The IWLCA, which has recognized 62 Nittany Lions with All-America honors since 1982, will recognize its 2013 All-Americans at a banquet at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa., Saturday, May 25.
In 2013, Lechner has enjoyed a breakout season for the Nittany Lions. The Silver Spring, Md., native has collected career highs in goals (46), assists (8), points (54), draw controls (49) and caused turnovers (17), as well as single-game highs in points (5), goals (5), draw controls (7) and caused turnovers (4). An IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region and All-ALC First Team member, the midfielder leads the Nittany Lions in draw controls and ranks second in goals, third in points and fourth in assists. Lechner has also netted at least three goals in seven of the last eight games.
An Eldersburg, Md., native, McCormick has led the Nittany Lion attack all season, while ranking 11th in the NCAA in points (84) and 19th in assists (35). The Tewaaraton Award nominee has led or has tied for the team lead in points in 14 of 20 games this season and has set career highs in every offensive category. The attacker, who also earned IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region and All-ALC First Team recognition, also notched single-game highs in both goals (6) and assists (5). The attacker's 84 points are the most by a Nittany Lion since Tami Worley collected 94 points during Penn State's 1989 national championship season.
One of Penn State's defensive anchors, Guy has flourished during senior season. The Whitby, Ont., native ranks 10th in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (1.95) and has set career highs in ground balls (45), draw controls and caused turnovers (39). The defender, who has added one goal and two assists, paces Penn State in both ground balls and caused turnovers. In the Nittany Lions' NCAA second-round victory against UMass, Guy, who also earned IWLCA All-West/Midwest and All-ALC First Team honors, corralled a game-high six draw controls to push her career total to 101.
The seventh-seeded Nittany Lions will return to action Saturday, May 18 when they visit No. 2 Northwestern in the NCAA quarterfinals at Lakeside Field. The game will air live on the Big Ten Network at 8 p.m.
