UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Penn State Lady Lion basketball coach Coquese Washington has been elected as vice president/president-elect of the Executive Committee for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. She will automatically succeed Florida State's Sue Semrau as president in 2015-16 for a two-year term. Washington has served on the WBCA Board of Directors since 2008, including the past two years as treasurer.
"I'm both honored and excited to serve my colleagues as the vice president of the WBCA Board," Washington said. "President Sue Semrau brings great energy to her position and I look forward to working with her and the rest of the board to implement initiatives that will grow our game and inspire our members to continue making a positive difference through coaching."
Entering her seventh season, Washington has returned the Lady Lions to national prominence. This past season, she was named WBCA Region 6 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year after guiding the Lady Lions to their second-straight Big Ten regular season title with a 26-6 overall record and 14-2 mark in conference play. For her efforts, Washington was selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second-straight season by the media.
The Lady Lions have increased their Big Ten win total each of Washington's six campaigns. Additionally under Washington's tutelage, Penn State has claimed a Big Ten Player of the Year honor (Lucas) and seven All-Big Ten first team accolades (Alex Bentley-3; Maggie Lucas-2; Tyra Grant-2). Washington has also had three WNBA Draft picks under Washington's guidance (Tyra Grant, Alex Bentley, Nikki Greene).
