UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Four members of the Penn State women's lacrosse team were honored with Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-West/Midwest Region recognition, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Senior defender Katie Guy (Whitby, Ont.), sophomore midfielder Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore attacker Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) earned IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First-Team honors, while freshman midfielder Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) was named to the second team. An Eldersburg, Md., native, McCormick earned first-team recognition for the second straight year.
One of three Nittany Lion captains, Guy has flourished as one of Penn State's defensive anchors. The All-ALC First-Team honoree has set career highs in ground balls (43), caused turnovers (35) and draw controls (34), while ranking 12th in the NCAA in ground balls per game. The Whitby, Ont., native has also collected one goal and two assists for Penn State in 2013.
A Silver Spring, Md., native, Lechner has enjoyed a breakout sophomore season. The midfielder leads the team in draw controls (48) and free-position goals (5) and ranks second in goals (41), third in points (48) and caused turnovers (17) and fifth in ground balls (22). The midfielder, who was named to the All-ALC First Team, is one of five Nittany Lions with at least 10 draw controls, ground balls and caused turnovers.
A two-time IWLCA All-West/Midwest First-Team member, McCormick ranks 15th in the NCAA with 76 points, 19th in points per game (4.22) and 22nd in assists (33). The All-ALC First-Team honoree paces the Penn State squad in goals (43), assists and points and is one of 25 female nominees for the Tewaaraton Award. In 2013, the attacker has set career highs in goals, assists, points, caused turnovers (3), goals in a game (6) and assists in a game (5), while notching her 100th career point against Drexel March 22.
Mosketti has started all 18 games for the Nittany Lions during her rookie season and ranks second on the squad in ground balls (33), draw controls (36) and caused turnovers (21). The All-ALC Second-Team member has also added 24 goals and six assists.
In all, 128 NCAA Division I student-athletes were honored with IWLCA all-region recognition. The four Nittany Lions are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-America teams, which will be announced May 17.
