UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A pair of Nittany Lion men's lacrosse standouts - Greg Gurenlian and Drew Adams - will compete in Saturday's Major League Lacrosse Game at Charlotte's Memorial Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with a live broadcast on ESPN2.
The MLL All-Star has a new format this season with two teams, Eclipse and Supernova, headed by captains Frank Ranfone (Supernova) and Cameron MacKenzie (Eclipse). Team selections will be made on Friday in alternating fashion by the captains.
For the New York Lizards teammates, Gurenlian is making his first All-Star Game appearance, while Adams will be making his third. The Lizards are 3-7 this season, but sit just two games out of the fourth and final playoff position.
Gurenlian leads the MLL in faceoff winning percentage (61.3), while pitching in with three goals, four assists and 66 ground balls. Adams leads the league in saves (141) thus far and is the two-time defending MLL Goalie of the Year.
Just missing out on a trip to the All-Star game is 2012 Penn State graduate Matthew Mackrides, who is having a breakout year for the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The second-year attackman has 17 goals, eight assists and eight ground balls through 10 games this year. Chesapeake (6-4) is in third place in the MLL.
Other Nittany Lions in the MLL include Matt Bernier (New York) who has appeared in five games with four ground balls and Pat Heim (Boston) who has scored twice in five games this year to go along with four assists.
