Penn State Defeats Nebraska-Omaha in Preseason Opener, 1-0

Aug 17, 2013

Omaha, Neb. -

Senior Martin Seiler (Stuttgart, Germany) volleyed home a corner kick in the 13th minute to lead the Penn State men's soccer team to a 1-0 exhibition win over the University of Nebraska-Omaha Saturday night in the "South Omaha Classic."

Nearly a quarter of an hour into the match, Omaha native Grant Warming (Omaha, Neb.) curled a corner kick into the box and Seiler beat goalkeeper Matt Grosey with a volley to give the Nittany Lions an early 1-0 advantage.

UNO nearly answered in the 55th minute when Craig Buettner fired a shot from 20 yards that ricocheted off the inside of the post. The ball bounced across the face of goal, but danger was quickly quelled by the Penn State defense.

Penn State and Omaha alternated scoring chances throughout the remainder of the match, but goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton (Snellville, Ga.) and the Nittany Lion backline managed to preserve the clean sheet. Wolverton made four saves in the effort.

Prior to the match, Penn State teamed up with the Creighton University men's soccer team and United Health for the third annual "Audrey's Shoes for Kids." The teams handed out soccer gear to underprivileged youth in the Omaha area to honor the memory of the late Audrey Warming.

The Nittany Lions will take a quick break before returning to action Tuesday at Jeffrey Field for an exhibition match against preseason No. 2 Maryland at 7:00 pm. The pair of sides battled to an exciting 2-2 draw in an exhibition last season at Ludwig Field.
