UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's soccer team travels to Annapolis, Md. today to close out its three-game preseason slate with a tilt against Navy Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
The match marks Penn State's final preseason test before opening its regular season schedule against Radford at 7:00 p.m. on Jeffrey Field August 30.
The Nittany Lions most recently tied No. 2 Maryland, 1-1, at Jeffrey Field last Saturday night. Penn State was the beneficiary of a rookie combination, as freshman Connor Maloney hooked up with classmate Mark Wadid for a go-ahead goal in the seventh minute.
Wadid broke free behind the Terrapin backline and Maloney played a perfect ball to the striker from the right flank. Wadid then pocketed the ball in the corner from the top of the 18-yard box to give the Lions the early lead.
Penn State held Maryland scoreless in the run of play, as the Terps lone tally came on a penalty kick in the 37th minute. The center back tandem of Martin Seiler and Akil Howard kept Maryland's forwards largely in check, as goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton made multiple point-blank saves.
The Lions are 36-20 all-time against Navy, and the pair of sides met in an exhibition this past spring in University Park.
