Aug 25, 2013

CHESTER, Pa. - Matthew Mackrides, a 2012 Penn State men's lacrosse alum, scored a goal and dished an assist as his Chesapeake Bayhawks defeated Charlotte, 10-9, in the Major League Lacrosse Championship on Sunday at PPL Park.

Mackrides' helper with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to Drew Westervelt gave Chesapeake a 10-7 lead in what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Earlier, Mackrides took a Michael Kimmel feed and laced a shot with 2:34 remaining in the third quarter. The goal gave Chesapeake an 8-4 lead, which matched the largest lead of the game.

For the playoffs Mackrides finished with three points, adding an assist during Friday night's stunning 13-12 comeback victory over Hamilton. The Bayhawks out-scored Hamilton 5-1 in the fourth to secure a spot in the league final.

Mackrides' second season in MLL was largely successful with 21 goals, nine assists and 30 points in 30 games played. He shot 39 percent from the field and picked up 11 ground balls.

For Chesapeake, the title is the third in the past four years.
