ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Nittany Lion men's golf squad will enter the final round of the Wolverine Intercollegiate in fourth place after shooting a 291 and 284 in rounds one and two, respectively, to total a 7-over-par 575 on the day.
"The guys worked hard today to get back in position to fight for this win tomorrow," said head coach Greg Nye. "We had four guys post some low numbers today. We need all five in the hunt tomorrow."
Junior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) posted a career-low single round score of 68 in the second round to mark a 1-under-par 141 through 36 holes of play. Talbert sits tied-for-fourth overall on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) earned a 2-over-par 144 (74-70) to place him tied-for-14th.
One stroke behind Vartelas on the leaderboard are teammates JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) and Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), who both earned a 145 total and will go into the final 18 holes tied-for-18th. Sophomore Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) shot a 154 (76-78) and is tied-for-48th.
Senior Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio), who is playing as an individual, marked a 151 after day one of the Wolverine Intercollegiate and sits in 43rd place.
Michigan State leads the 11-team field, posting a 3-over 571 team score. Host school Michigan is tied-for-second with Lamar at 573.
Cody Blink of San Jose State shot a 10-under-par 132 to secure the first place individual spot through day one.
The final round of the Wolverine Intercollegiate will begin with tee times starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the U-M Golf Course.
