Wolverine Intercollegete Final
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Penn State men's golf team finished in sixth place Tuesday at the Wolverine Intercollegiate. The Nittany Lions shot a 289 in the final round to post an 864 total.
Junior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) finished in eighth place overall, making par with a 213 (73-68-72). Talbert's second round mark of 68 beat his previous career-low single round score (69).
Junior Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) posted a 217 through 54 holes, finishing tied-for-19th. Sophomore Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) concluded his play on the U-M Golf Course one stroke behind McDonald-Smith, shooting a 218 (74-70-74), finishing tied-for-21st.
Sophomore JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) placed tied-for-24th overall with a 219 total. Rounding out team play for Penn State was sophomore Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.), who improved three positions in the final round to finish 45th. His tournament-best round of 71 on the last 18 holes brought his three-round score to a 225.
Senior captain Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio) played as an individual and completed the tournament with a 228.
Michigan State's 851 team score edged Lamar by two strokes to earn the 2013 Wolverine Intercollege Championship. San Jose State's Cody Blick remained in first place from day one to win the individual crown, leading second place finisher Chris O'Neill of Michigan by 3 strokes. Blick finished the tournament with an impressive 10-under-par 203.
The Nittany Lions will resume their 2013-14 campaign in Lake Forest, Ill. for the Windon Memorial Classic Sept. 22-23.
