Penn State finishes in 13th Place at Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate

Sept. 22, 2013

Final Round Results

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- As the rain shortened Mercedes Benz came to a close, the Nittany Lions couldn't do enough to bring home back-to-back championships in Knoxville. Penn State shot a final round 309 to put them in 13th place for the tournament. The Nittany Lions recorded 601 shots for the two rounds, which is equivalent to 33 strokes over par.

Junior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) finished in a tie for 46th place as she shot a final round 78. The junior finished at eight strokes over par as she has 150 strokes. Senior Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) finished just two strokes behind Ceresko as the Bethany Beach native shot the lowest round of the day for any Nittany Lion as she shot a 75. Vosters finished in a tie for 56th place as she recorded 152 strokes for the tournament.

"When everyone on the team does not have their best day, that's what happens unfortunately," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. The difficulty of this sport is that there is no chance for subs if you are having an off day- the score still counts. My biggest hope is that they will use this as a lesson and as a turning point with their best rounds ahead of them."

Arkansas overtook South Carolina to win the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate by eight strokes. Arkansas' round of 281 was the lowest final round score. Emily Tubert of Arkansas won the individual tournament as she shot a final round 68 to win by three strokes over five girls that tied for second.

The Nittany Lions are next in action this Friday, September 27 as they play host to the Nittany Lion Invitational, a tournament they won last year. The tournament lasts three days with more information coming in the next couple of days only on the Penn State Athletics website at www.gopsusports.com.
