Big Ten, NCAA Regionals Highlight 2014 Schedule

Sept. 23, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; September 23, 2013 - The 2014 Penn State women's gymnastics schedule features four home dates during the regular season, along with hosting the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Regional Championships inside the historic Recreation Building.

"We are very enthusiastic about our 2014 home schedule," said head coach Jeff Thompson. "We have two double dual meets, two quad meets and host the Big Ten and NCAA Regional Championship meets - so something for everyone this season.

"We love competing in the double dual format with our men's team and we know our fans love it, too," Thompson said. "But, every meet can't be a double dual. So, we are using the first and last home meets as a warm-up for the Big Ten and NCAA Regional Championships by scheduling both as quad meets. The quad meets will give our team two great opportunities to compete in Rec Hall with the championship set-up. This should help them prepare for the post-season like never before."

Penn State opens the season with four of their first five meets on the road, but will close the season with two of the biggest competitions on their home floor.

After beginning the year at Iowa State on Sunday, Jan. 5 and traveling to Lexington, Ky. for a quad-meet on Friday, Jan. 10 against host Kentucky, Ball State and West Virginia, the Nittany Lions host their own quad-meet against Cornell, Southeast Missouri State and UIC on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The early season road trips end with a pair of Big Ten competitions, at Michigan State on Saturday, Jan. 25 and at Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Three of the Lions next four meets will be contested inside of Rec Hall, beginning with a Big Ten showdown against Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 8. The annual "Flip for a Cure" meet will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15 when the Blue and White host Illinois. After a trip to Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 22 for a quad-meet that also includes Temple and Ursinus, Penn State will close out their home schedule with a tri-meet against Bridgeport, Western Michigan and Yale on Friday, Feb. 28.

After heading to Durham, N.H on Saturday, March 8 for a quad-meet with host New Hampshire, Bridgeport and New Hampshire, the Nittany Lions close out the season with a Big Ten quad-meet in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday, March 15 vs. Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa.

The Championship portion of the schedule begins inside the friendly confines of the Recreation Building as the University Park campus welcomes the other seven Big Ten gymnastics programs for the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, March 22. Sessions for the Big Ten Championships will take place at 1 and 6 p.m.

Just two weeks later, Penn State hosts the NCAA Regional Championships at Rec Hall for the 13th time in school history. The competition will take place on Saturday, April 5, with the top two teams and qualifying individuals earning a trip to the NCAA Championships which will be held in Birmingham, Ala. on April 18-20.
