Men's Golf Closes Out Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in 13th Place

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The Penn State men's golf team capped the three day Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club in 13th place, posting a team score of 911 (305-295-311).

Sophomore JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) lead the Nittany Lion starters consistently throughout the 54 holes, shooting a 73, 71, and 76 in rounds 1, 2, and 3, respectively. His 4-over 220 total earned him a tied-for-40th placing overall. Junior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) marked a 78 in the final round to bring his score to 227 and a tied-for-62nd finish. Sophomore Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) was not far behind Talbert with a total of 229 through three rounds of play.

Sophomore Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) posted a 235 at the Blackthorn Club and earned a tied-for-70th placing. Finalizing the Penn State starting roster was freshman Cody Cox (Milford, Pa.), who shot a 256 in his first collegiate golf tournament.

Freshman Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) played as an individual in his first time traveling with the Lions. Elliott tied-for-56th on the leader board with a 9-over 225 (72-79-74).

Virginia earned a come-from-behind team victory at the 2013 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, shooting a 275 on the final 18 holes to post a 22-under total score of 842. Only three strokes separated Virgina, 2nd place Virginia Tech (843) and 3rd place Kent State (844).

Penn State will continue the Fall 2013 campaign in Beallsville, Md. For the Georgetown Intercollegiate Oct. 21-22.
