Qualifying Singles Draw | Main Draw Singles | Main Draw Doubles
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's tennis heads to Charlottesville, Va. to compete at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by the University of Virginia. The five-day tournament begins Friday and will run through Tuesday. It will be played outdoors at Perry-Fishburne Courts and Snyder Varsity Courts.
The tournament will begin Friday with Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada), Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Katherine Whiteaway(Sawbridgeworth, England) competing in the qualifying round of singles. The qualifying round begins at 9:30 a.m. with a 32-player draw with winners moving on to the round of 16 and losers heading to the back draw both beginning at noon.
The eight winners from the second round of qualifying singles will move into the main draw set to begin Saturday. This allows every player in qualifying to play in at least two matches Friday. At last year's regional tournament Jacqueline Zuhse(Boca Raton, Fla.) won both of her qualifying matches to move into the main draw as a freshman.
Action continues in the afternoon session with the first round of doubles. Bedard and Sandor will return to the court at 3 p.m. following their singles matches in the morning to compete in the doubles round of 64. The duo did not play together at all last year but competed in eight matches together during their freshman and sophomore seasons winning twice.
Sunday will begin with doubles play in the round of 16 at 9:30 a.m. Singles will follow with the main draw second round beginning at 11 a.m. and third round scheduled for 2:30 p.m. There will be a back draw for singles allowing all main draw singles players the opportunity to play at least two singles matches during the weekend.
Quarterfinals of the singles tournament will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday with semifinals to follow at 1:30 p.m. The day will close with the doubles quarterfinals at 3 p.m. The tournament will conclude Tuesday with the singles final and doubles semifinal and final.
