UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshman Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alta) netted his first career goal, while classmate David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) and sophomore Curtis Loik (North Vancouver, B.C.) also reached the back of the net, as the Nittany Lion men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie against RIT at Pegula Ice Arena Friday night.
Penn State (1-2-1), which tied for the first time in its two-year NCAA history, took an early 1-0 lead with Richard's marker before the Tigers (0-3-2) responded with a pair of power-play goals to take a one-goal advantage. Goodwin tied the game with an extra-man strike 15:21 into the second period, before Loik's tally gave Penn State a 3-2 lead with 11:13 left in regulation.
The Tigers fought back and sent the game to overtime on Brad McGowan's goal with 7:39 left in the third period. After a scoreless overtime, RIT went on to win the shootout by a 2-0 score.
Penn State, which went 1-for-5 on the power play, out shot the Tigers by a 35-25 margin. Nittany Lion netminder Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) turned aside 22 shots, while Jordan Ruby made 32 saves.
With 13:45 left in the opening frame, Richard brought the home crowd to its feet with his first career goal. Defenseman Patrick Koudys (Smithville, Ont.) moved the puck to Richard, who orchestrated a nifty move through the RIT defense before slipping the puck through Ruby's five-hole.
The Tigers evened the score at 1-1 with their first power-play tally at 8:19 of the frame. Mike Colavecchia slid the puck to McGowan in the corner, where he found Mitchell in the high slot for the marker. While on a four-on-three power play with 2:47 left, Colavecchia gave RIT a 2-1 lead when his shot through traffic eluded Skoff. Matt Garbowsky and Greg Noyes collected assists on the play.
Goodwin scored the equalizer with a power-play goal with 4:39 left in the second period. Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) moved the puck up the right-wing boards to Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.), who skated it into the PSU offensive zone. The Blaine, Minn., native then located Goodwin in the slot, where he fired a shot for his second goal of the season.
The Nittany Lions skated to a 3-2 lead with Loik's goal at 8:47. Sophomore Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) sent a pass to Loik, who wristed a dump-in from the blue line that bounced in front of Ruby and into the back of the net.
With 7:19 left in the game, McGowan accounted for the 3-3 final when he beat Skoff from the bottom of the right circle.
The Nittany Lions will return to action Saturday, Oct. 26 when they travel to the Wells Fargo Center to face Vermont in the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff. The game, which will air on The Comcast Network, is set for 5 p.m.
