Fuhrman Claims Penn State's Seventh Straight Defensive Honor

Oct. 29, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Abby Fuhrman (Bainbridge, Pa.) was awarded her first career Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolade on Tuesday after playing an integral part in the team's wins over Iowa and UC Davis this past weekend.

In Friday's 2-1 victory over Iowa, Fuhrman and the rest of the Penn State defense played a great defensive game, allowing just one goal and no penalty corners to the Hawkeyes. The senior was part of the Lions' backline that did not allow a single shot in the final 19 minutes of play vs. Iowa en route to capturing at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.

Fuhrman showed off her offensive prowess in the following match vs. UC Davis. The Bainbridge native fired a shot past the Aggie keeper in the second half to record her second goal of the season and help Penn State win by a final of 5-0. Fuhrman helped PSU shutout the opposition for a Big Ten leading seventh time this season.

This week's honor continues the long run of consecutive Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week winners, as the team has grabbed the honor for seven straight weeks. Other Nittany Lions who have received the award are Kylie Licata, Laura Gebhart and Brittany Grzywacz (4).

Fuhrman and the Nittany Lions wrap up the regular season at Michigan next weekend, as the team looks to win the Big Ten title outright for the sixth time in school history. The match is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
