UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women's Tennis will head to New Haven, Connecticut this weekend to compete in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Yale. The tournament begins Friday and lasts through Sunday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Penn State will be one of three Big Ten teams competing in the Bulldog Invitational this year with Iowa and Purdue also participating. The rest of the field consists of the host Yale Bulldogs as well as Boston College, Brown, Dartmouth and Virginia Tech. Of the eight teams competing, five finished last season in the ITA Team Rankings with Penn State ranking third highest among the five.
The tournament format features one round of singles and one round of doubles each day. There will be eight flights of singles and four flights of doubles in each round. The third set will be played to completion in all singles matches throughout the weekend.
A point value will be given to individual players for each win based on match position. At the end of the tournament the singles player and doubles team with the most points will be named the champion. Point values for this week's tournament are below:
Win at No. 1 position - 8 points
Win at No. 2 position - 7 points
Win at No. 3 position - 6 points
Win at No. 4 position - 5 points
Win at No. 5 position - 4 points
Win at No. 6 position - 3 points
Win at No. 7 position - 2 points
Win at No. 8 position - 1 point
The Nittany Lions will begin the tournament competing against Dartmouth in singles play at 10 a.m. and will move to doubles play at 1 p.m. where they will meet Boston College. Penn State will square off against Boston College in singles play Saturday morning before facing Brown in doubles during the afternoon. The Nittany Lions will close out play Sunday against Dartmouth in doubles at noon and finally in singles against Brown directly following doubles competition.
Following the Bulldog Invitational the Nittany Lions will be back in action at the ITA Atlantic Regional from October 18-22 in Charlottesville, Pa.
