UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior goaltender Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.) saved 33 shots, but Penn State women's hockey fell 4-0 to Robert Morris on Thursday night at Pegula Ice Arena.
Robert Morris (7-2-0, 1-0-0 CHA), one of the hottest teams in the nation, showed its offensive prowess early by tallying a goal just 2:17 into the contest off the stick of Katie Fergus right in front of net. Mackenzie Johntson played a quick pass through the slot to Fergus who made no mistake. The Colonials out-shot Penn State 15-4 in the first period.
The second period was more of the same as the Colonials opened a three-goal lead on even strength goals from Rebecca Vint and Maeve Garvey at 7:10 and 10:34, respectively, in the period.
The third period belonged to Penn State as the Nittany Lions looked to cut into the lead. Two good chances came midway through the frame as Amy Petersen's (Minnetonka, Minn.) doorstep shots were knocked away by RMU netminder Courtney Vinet (18 saves).
A few minutes later, Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) attempted to put home a rebound, but Vinet was there again. RMU's Brittany Howard tallied the game's final goal at 17:24 in the third period, an unassisted tally off a PSU turnover.
Penn State (2-6-1, 0-1-0 CHA) was led by Shannon Yoxheimer's (Jackson, Mich.) four shots, while Birdie Shaw (Troy, Mich.) went 5-5 at the faceoff dot. RMU held a 25-22 edge in faceoffs.
The two teams rematch tomorrow afternoon with a 4 p.m. opening faceoff at Pegula Ice Arena. All Penn State students are free with valid ID.
