ROCHESTER, N.Y. - For the second time in as many games, the Nittany Lion women's hockey team took a third-period lead, but ultimately fell as RIT skated away with a 2-1 win at Ritter Arena on Friday night. Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored the game's first goal with nine minutes remaining before RIT scored two goals in the final 5:42 of the game.
The Nittany Lions withstood an early RIT onslaught before slowly earning the better of the play throughout the second and third periods. Gross cashed in on her team-leading fifth goal of the year on Emily Laurenzi's (Townsend, Del.) first assist of the year with 8:56 left.
Penn State (2-10-1, 0-5-0 CHA) couldn't maintain the lead long as the Tigers fought back with Morgan Scoyne's first goal of the year with 5:42 to go. Mackenzie Stone finished the job with a goal just 1:08 from the final horn as the Tigers improved to 6-5-1 overall, 2-0-1 in the CHA.
Nittany Lion goaltender Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.) did all she could, stopping 36 of 38 RIT shots on goal. Her counterpart, Ali Binnington, made 22 saves on 23 Penn State shots. The Nittany Lions won the faceoff battle, 28-21, and both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.
The two squads meet again Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup at Ritter Arena.
