UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshman forward David Goodwin's (Des Peres, Mo.) third-period strike brought the Nittany Lions to within a goal, but the Penn State men's hockey team fell to No. 13/16 UMass Lowell, 3-2, at Pegula Ice Arena Friday night. The Nittany Lions fell to 3-5-1 with the setback, while UMass Lowell improved to 8-4-0.
After sophomore Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) tied the game with a power-play goal, UMass Lowell answered with a pair of first-period markers as it skated to a 3-1 lead. A scoreless second period followed before Goodwin netted his third goal of the season to make it a 3-2 game.
UMass Lowell, who went 1-for-5 on the power play, out shot the Nittany Lions by a 44-37 margin. Penn State went 1-for-2 with the man advantage, while freshman Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.) turned aside 41 shots in his home debut. River Hawk goaltender Doug Carr made 35 saves.
With 15:34 remaining in the first, Joe Gambardella opened the scoring when he netted a rebound off Derek Arnold's initial attempt. Shayne Thompson also collected an assist on the play.
At 10:25 of the stanza, Scheid netted his team-leading fourth marker of the season to even the score. While on the power play, defenseman Mark Yanis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) moved the puck along the blue line to Luke Juha (Mississauga, Ont.). The Mississauga, Ont., native's blue-line blast ricocheted off the end boards as Scheid crashed the net for the goal.
The River Hawks responded with a pair of markers as they took the two-goal lead. With 8:42 left in the period, Josh Holmstrom's shot went behind the Nittany Lion cage, and Stephen Buco banked the puck off McAdam's pads and into the net.
Adam Chapie extended the lead with 2:10 to play. Josh Holmstrom directed the puck to Chapie in the left corner, where he wristed a power-play tally.
In the third period, Goodwin capitalized on a River Hawk turnover to make it a one-goal affair. The forward intercepted a clearing attempt in the high slot and deked to his backhand before sliding the puck under Carr.
The Nittany Lions pulled McAdam in exchange for an extra skater with 1:03 left in the game but, despite controlling play in the UMass Lowell zone, were unable to tally the equalizer.
Penn State will return to action in two weeks when it hosts Union for a two-game series Nov. 30 - Dec. 1.
